Nigeria; whenever we remember our story
We also recall the labors of our heroes past
Yes! Those who led the journey on our way to glory
Who struggled and fought until independence we have at last
From Lagos, Nigeria to London, England
Our nationalists gathered and went
Together, united and harmonious as a band
Nothing else but freedom their resolve was bent
It was not about being Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba
It was for a people, one nation, one Nigeria
A vision represented in Azikwe, Awolowo & Balewa
They sang one song with one voice, the ideal wazobia
They kept singing until the Queen herself their voices heard
Delegates and representatives visit to Nigeria would not do
With the sole of her feet, Nigeria she did thread
With the voice of her mouth, our dependence she did undo
Having masters, we slept on 1960, September the thirtieth
It was a night of nights as we ushered in a new era
We awoke free, masters to ourselves October the first
57 years later, just as it was then, it is now and we still hear the change mantra
Independence is still a blessing but yet to pull off the cloak of woes
Woes of war, segregation, terrorism & corruption
By ourselves, to ourselves we became our only foes
And at a well advanced age, we still miraculously await redemption
Biafra has an agenda
Odu’a has a propaganda
Arewa to oust has marked its calender
“I am relevant” Niger Deltan blows up a reminder
Nigeria; you know, we know, the whole world knows and talks about your potentials
But really! We are tired of hearing about your endless possibilities
Can we rise? I speak to all millennials
Our fathers are asleep, let’s stand up and take responsibilities
My dear Nigerians, we must no longer remain in despair
Like the phoenix we rise out of the ashes, from death to life
We must not lose heart, our situation is not beyond repair
Together, with focus and direction we have to keep hope alive.
57hearty Cheers to a great Nation
Happy independence day Nigeria
